Clement 'Sir Coxsone' Dodd was fifteen years younger than Duke Reid and went from playing records in front of his parents' liquor store to attract customers to building a sound system in 1954 to rival Duke Reid's.

However, in time, the business of sound systems and, later, recording local bands became the principal focus of Duke Reid's operations. He also sponsored and hosted a radio show, Treasure Isle Time that played American jazz and R&B records. Initially, Reid built his sound system and staged parties as a way of promoting the family business. DJ Hollywood was likely the most accomplished of the club DJs as hip-hop was being born and he clearly played a part in setting the stage for what was to come.Īrthur 'Duke' Reid was a Jamaican police officer who left the force in the late 1940s to help run the family business, the Treasure Isle Grocery & Liquor Store. They also became star personalities whose vocal raps played an important part in maintaining and orchestrating the energy of the club experience, which would lay the groundwork for early hip-hop DJs and, especially, MCs.
